Welcome to Green-Door Ireland

This website is a source of information for people interested in sustainable and future-proof building be it: thinking about building/ hoping to build / having already built or simply having an interest in it. There are some great examples here and more could be added anytime -do let us know if there is a building you would like to see added.

The Green-Door festival is an occasional event that is held to celebrate and grant access to the many amazing, curious, hidden and sustainable buildings tucked away in the Leitrim countryside. The festival depends on funded and a whole lot of volunteer work and so only happens when those things collide. There will not be a festival in 2019 - however do keep an eye here for any other developments and sign up to our newsletter for very occasional updates.

Green-Door 2017 was a Great Success!

Held: Friday 29th Sept - Sunday 1st October 2017

Please check out the gallery page to get a flavour of the event.

Many thanks to all the wonderful homeowners who so generously opened their homes over the weekend... Green-Door couldn't happen without them.

Also, many thanks to our funders, the volunteers, Sligo IT, and all our supporters.

Thank you to the steering committee who worked with Jo Lewis over the last six months to make the festival the success it was : Jean Mcdonald, Kevin Callaghan, Mike Harris, Brian Smyth and Dominic Stevens.

This year we collaborated with The Dock Arts Centre whose Director Sarah Searson curated the exhibition 'Thinking, Living, Dwelling' designed to underpin and celebrate the Green-Door festival. So finally a huge thank you to Sarah Searson and all at the Dock who were a massive part of the success of Green-Door 2017

In 2015 we worked with award winning filmmaker Róisín Loughgrey on a new exciting interactive documentary: ‘Through the Green Door’ based on four of the homes featured on our website.

An i-doc is an interactive documentary film viewed on the web where the narrative unfolds depending on what YOU want to see.  The idea of ‘Through the Green Door’ is to try to make the Green Door festival experience available to a wider audience. Interviews with homeowners, architects and builders and footage of inside houses allows the viewer to hear a wide range of stories about building, living and renovating in Co Leitrim.

The viewer has a choice of homes to visit, all very different from each other and each with its own story to tell. You click on the house you want to see and listen to an interview with the homeowners. From there you have other options: to hear an interview with the architect or builder, to take a virtual wander round the house or to go back and select another story.
